Mel and Geoff suggested I hiKe up to San Giovanni's Kastle while I'm in Kotor, Montenegro.
Giovanni, John, Ivan? It has many names. The fortress was originally built in Medieval times and has undergone modifications and repairs since. From the 9-19th C the walls were completed forming a belt around the old urban centre. Now this area is filled with upmarket souvenir and fashion and jewellery stores and of course the ubiquitous pizza restaurant. There are 18 Churches and 9 Palaces ( remains of) within the gates.
I wasn't too sure just how much of a hike this was going to be so I checked reviews on Trip Advisor to see what people were saying. Hmmm serious hike, go early in the morning to make use of the shade, take lots of water and if you have a heart condition, don't attempt it. Oh Gosh.
it was stinking hot, as usual when I checked in to my accom. Carefully chosen, so I'm very close to the start of the hike. Yes, it's steep and uphill all the way.
I woke at 4am to thunder and lightning, then gently came the rain. I checked the forecast and by 9 am it would be pretty much finished and remain cloudy for the remainder of the day. Terrific, so I head out the door a little before 9. My host didn't think it was a good idea as he felt The rain was not over. Oh well If I get wet I wasn't too far from home. So off I go, large bottle of water, map and camera.
you can see lightning about 2/3 way through the vid. My accom is just off to the right, everyone else on the hike was English speaking and from the cruise ship.
