Last weekend I joined the latte set and visited a small coastal village on north coast of Hvar Island. The whole courtyard is lined with cafes. Local knowledge tells me that the patrons on the east side of the courtyard are the Catholics, well let's say they are on the right hand side! the patrons having coffee on the other side, that would be the left, are enjoying hospitality from the Macedonians.. The best thing about these cafes is the little cakes you get with your coffee.
So I ordered a herbal tea and got a delicious walnut toffee morsel to have with it. Yumm.
The next day I decided to head out there again and walk to one of the nearby beaches and then catch the bus home. The Macedonian cafe owner remembered me from yesterday and I asked for two pieces of walnut toffee (Figaro) to have with a cup of hot water. He was delighted. This is what he served me.
I got two complete slabs of Figaro, so I managed to eat one and left the other with my name on it collect after my beach visit.
I mentioned to Lesley that I'd enjoyed my Figaro and would head out again on the bus, just to enjoy the sweet treat. Huh. She told me of a cafe at the end of her street that sells it. It's a Macedonian run cafe, of course.
today I took myself off there and bought a slab!! On the way out I showed the owner how pleased I was with my purchase, I got a high Five from him and then a handshake and a respectful bow.
